WIEGO
A new website to reflect WIEGO's mission and enhance global advocacy
A new website to reflect WIEGO's mission and enhance global advocacy
Before diving into design and development, we conducted a holistic audit of all WIEGO’s content. With a focus on the site’s primary audiences—researchers, policymakers, government officials, and informal workers—this effort included restructuring the overall navigation to enhance usability and introducing new content types, such as compelling worker stories and thematic landing pages that highlight WIEGO’s connections to various global issues. This effort included restructuring the overall navigation to enhance usability and introducing new content types, such as compelling worker stories and thematic landing pages that highlight WIEGO’s connections to various global issues. With over 3,000 publications and multilingual content in English, French, Spanish, and non-Latin characters, we identified inefficiencies in navigation and content discovery. Our strategic recommendations included restructuring the site’s information architecture, introducing dynamic content sections, and creating audience-specific landing pages to ensure clarity and accessibility for researchers, policymakers, and workers.
WIEGO needed a platform that could evolve with their initiatives. We implemented a powerful modular page builder in WordPress, allowing their team to easily create tailored landing pages for campaigns, events, and advocacy efforts. Working within WIEGO’s established brand guidelines, we designed a clean, professional aesthetic that seamlessly integrates their identity while improving usability and readability.
One of the project’s biggest technical challenges was migrating WIEGO’s vast content library from Drupal to WordPress. The Drupal setup was messy, requiring significant data cleanup to ensure consistency and accuracy during the migration process. This included thousands of publications, blog posts, news updates, and events—many in multiple languages. Our team worked meticulously to ensure that every piece of content retained its integrity and structure. The migration effort involved developing custom scripts for seamless data transfer and verifying the accuracy of content presentation.
With a global audience spanning multiple languages, WIEGO’s website required robust multilingual functionality. Throughout the process, we worked collaboratively with WIEGO’s communications team, presenting updates to the larger organization at every milestone. This ensured the project reflected their goals and vision while fostering alignment across teams. We integrated WPML to provide an intuitive language-switching experience and ensured that the advanced search function delivered accurate, contextually relevant results across all languages. The search tool was designed to prioritize recent and popular publications, allowing users to access critical information efficiently.
WIEGO’s research library is central to their mission. To showcase their extensive body of work, we developed advanced search capabilities powered by Studio Simpatico’s custom-built plugin, Jazzy. This tool supports filtering by language, topic, and type, offering users a seamless experience in navigating WIEGO’s research library. The dynamic content structure ensures that users can easily find the latest reports, data, and multimedia resources—a crucial feature for researchers, policymakers, and advocacy groups alike.
The redesigned WIEGO website exemplifies how thoughtful design and technical innovation can amplify a mission-driven organization’s impact. Our collaborative approach, including training sessions and continuous engagement with WIEGO’s communications team, empowered them to confidently manage and leverage their new digital platform. With an accessible, multilingual platform that supports dynamic content, WIEGO is now equipped to share their message and empower informal workers worldwide.
